Can a woman raise a boy to be a Man?

My son is growing so fast. I mean these 3.5 years have passed so quickly and are still flying by. Beyond that, I have this goal where I want all of the best things for him. I want him to play sports and be book smart. I want him to respect women and be a gentleman. I want him to find a good woman, marry and have a beautiful family. I want what any parent wants for their child. My only concern is: will I be able to push him to do all of that on my own. Can I raise him to be all that and more by myself?

This question has been raised plenty of times. There are so many single women now raising their children on their own with no assistance. Whether it be due to her own faults or not, that single mother is still doing what she needs to to raise her child/children. But the question still stands. I mean, my siblings and I were raised by a single parent. I am a product of that situation and I continued to pursue my dreams and more. But isn't that dependent upon the parent? I had a strict upbringing so I figure that is why I was so focused on being the best and doing what was right.

Do boys feel the same though?

I ask that because when you think about it, girls without male figures in their lives grow up with daddy issues. Come on now, we've all heard about this. The girl that didn't have her father around so growing up, she felt like she needed that 'love' from other men. She became promiscuous or dependent on men to satisfy and make her feel loved. You know what I'm talking about.

So when boys don't have that exact 'love' from their fathers or a male figure in their life, is that the EXACT reason why they turn to drugs, gangs, abusing women, etc? Is this solely the reason why our youth and men are turning out this way? Any feedback? Are you man that was raised by a single parent? What do you think?

  1. You know good and well that growing up in a single parent household isn't the sole reason for people being jacked up. Jacked up parents bring up jacked up kids. I've seen two parent homes where both parents are raggedy as hell and so are their children as a result. It's also a social implication involved as well. A lot of people aren't fit to have children because they themselves don't have their minds right but they'll have them anyway then blame everyone in the world besides themselves for everything wrong with their lives. As for your blog title, no a woman cannot raise a boy to be a man. How can she? Was she a man before? I can teach anyone to be a fireman because I'm not one thus I'm not qualified to teach another to be. The same analogy applies.

  2. Wow! Great question... I think a single Mom can raise her Ron to be a wonderful person, but only a man can teach a boy how to be a man. There are things about men that we as women will never understand, and that has a significant impact on our sons. However! I have met some great men that were raised by single mothers. I think the mothers they had made sure they had great male influences around them; youth pastors, mentors, uncles etc. If a single mother makes sure there is a "balance" in that her son has great role models-male and female then he will be A-ok. ;)

  3. Being a man raised by a single mother, my answer would be yes. Of course I'm speaking of my own personal experience, yet I believe it wasn't a rare case. I believe there comes a point in a young male's life when he may become rebellious towards his mother, for the simple fact that he starts to feel that she can no longer relate to him. When situations like that occur, thats usually when males seek other outlets, i.e gangs, drugs, etc My mother got me out of all that early and geared me to sports, which is where I received a majority of my male influence. With that being said, I know that my mother is the the Main reason that I am the man that I am.
